Ashland High @ The Roxy - Hollywood, CA

The Roxy Marquee

Fans lined the sidewalk of Sunset Strip outside The Roxy Theater in Hollywood, CA. The crowd rushed the venue when the doors opened making a break for the stage. Now for the guys attending the show, I believe it was to watch the girls in heavy eyeliner and short shorts aka The Millionaires, but that’s just my opinion.

The Airborne Toxic Event @ House of Blues - San Diego

AT3

Concert review & photos by Christina Preiss for TNN Radio

After overcoming a ticket debacle at will call at the House of Blues, my friend and I entered the venue only to find out that the opening band had started early?!  What concert ever starts early?  Needless to say I missed Nightmare Air, but according to the concertgoers that I polled, I didn’t miss much.  This was because they couldn’t understand a word that they were saying.  However, after the show I looked them up on YouTube and I thought they were quite good.  Perhaps the sound wasn’t the best it could have been for them at the venue.  Regardless, I was really excited to see The Airborne Toxic Event up next.

OMD @ The Fonda Theater - Hollywood, CA

OMD5

Concert review & photos by Shareef Ellis for TNN Radio

It was another beautiful night in the City of Angels, and fans of one of the most poplular bands of the 80's stood in line to hear the iconic sounds of yesteryear. Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries are best known for that angelic synth-pop sound popularized in part by Hollywood. When you think of the 80's, you think of bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order or The Smiths. However, 80's pop culture also broght two bands to the top of the list as a result of John Hughes movies. Flicks like Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles propelled the Psychedelic Furs and Orchestral Manouvers in the Dark (OMD) to the pantheon of 80's new wave gods.

Face to Face, Teenage Bottle Rocket, Blacklist Royals @ House of Blues - San Diego, CA

Concert review & Photos by Christina Preiss for TNN Radio

When I arrived at the House of Blues in San Diego on that Wednesday night, I wasn’t even really sure that a show was actually going to happen.  However, I asked security and they said the doors were already open.  When I got downstairs there were only 3 people there.  It felt so strange that I was about to see one of my favorite bands in this space.  The last time I saw Face to Face here about a year before, the place was completely sold out.  Granted it was a weekend, but I figured that this place had to fill in pretty quick.

Atlas Genius, The Colourist & The Postelles @ SoHo - Santa Barbara, CA

Atlas 6

When it comes to mainstream music, bands seem to pop up out of nowhere. All of the sudden there's this super catchy song being played a million times a day on radio stations around the world, yet everyone has to break out their phones and google the lyrics in order to figure out who the "unknown" band is. Unfortunately for the masses, and bands alike, very few people are privy to the blood, sweat and tears, the years of hard work and dedication, the trials and tribulations and the albums that often times come before the right song catches the right ear and a band makes the coveted leap from unknown band to mainstream super group. A perfect example of that is Atlas Genius.

  • ALL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE REVIEWED!- Meaning we will listen to everything we received, realize it may take a while to get to your submission. Remember there are WAAAAAAAAY more of you then there are of us!

  • WHEN SENDING IN PHYSICAL COPIES BE SURE TO INCLUDE A LETTER WITH THE INFO WE NEED!- We think that one is pretty self explanitory.

  • YES, BURNED CDs ARE ACCEPTABLE! - Just remember, if you are sending us a burned disc, just be sure to label it with the band name, song title and either an email address or phone number. You don't know how many times we get unlabeled CDs with music sent to us or  the disc gets separated from the original package!

  • YES, ALL GENRES OF MUSIC ARE WELCOME!- We like all kinds of music here at S.L.A.M.! Scene, so if you're not sure if your death poka electro folk band will make the cut, send it on in and let us be the judge.

  • DO NOT CALL US, WE'LL CALL YOU!- In other words, don't harrass us to find out if we got your email or package. If you want to know if we got it, either send a return receipt with your initial email or if yer using snail mail, pop for the extra .65 and get a delivery confirmation!

  • JUST BECAUSE YOU SUBMITTED, DOESN'T MEAN YOU GET PLAYED!- We will listen to everything we get and we will hand pick everything we play on the show. If you get selected, we will contact you (hence us asking for your info) so you know when you will be on.

  • "WE NEVER HEARD BACK FROM US ON YOUR SUBMISSION, DOES THAT MEAN WE SUCK?"- "Yah, hang it up kid." Just kidding. Just because it's taking a while to hear from us doesn't mean yer dead in the water, might just be that there are a ton of bands in front of you, so don't give up. If you don't make the cut we will drop you a line at some point and let you know.

  • DON'T GO AWAY MAD, JUST GO AWAY!- This is called PROJECT:DEMOLUTION, not PROJECT: FLUFFY MUSIC KITTY HUG! If you don't get picked and don't make the cut, don't take it personal. We are going to be brutally honest and tough to really find the best of the best out of the submissions we receive.

So that about covers it, you got the lowdown and then some and you been warned, that the job was dangerous before yah took it! So have it at, send us your best, your worst, your mediocre but really we wanna hear what YOU got! Rememeber, THIS DEMOLUTION WILL BE PODCAST! GOOD LUCK!

Comprised of seasoned veterans who have seen their share of stages around the world, this squad demonstrates a knack for laying down shamelessly catchy hook-laden radio ready jams (“Beginning or The End”, “Happiness”) yet possesses the skill to just as easily throw down a hearty helping of substantial musicianship a la Queen and Muse as well (“All Out War”). Melding a wealth of emotional firepower with a flurry of serious musical chops, The Royal Guard has developed a stylish yet visceral sound for an audience that enjoys well-crafted songs with a discernibly energetic edge. www.facebook.com/theroyalguard

Norska - Norksa (Brutal Panda)

NORSKA

Portland, OR quartet Norska deliver an eponymous five-track, 40-minute sojourn chock full of slow churned sludgy psychedelic metal goodness (“Nobody One Knows”). Building a massive sound with hypnotic riffs and gradual dynamic shifts, Norska champions their dastardly set of doom metal nuances with a menacing conviction that allows listeners to properly commiserate with the band’s excruciating exertion of agonizing abrasiveness (“Two Coins for the Ferryman”). Able to hold attention spans despite song running times going past the 10-minute mark, Norska has created an oppressive and ominous collection of tunes that falls somewhere in between the mindbending nature of Neurosis and the howling fury of High on Fire. www.brutalpanda.com

Family - Portrait (Pelagic)

FAMILY

Classic rock and modern metal mindsets join forces on the eight-track album PORTRAIT from Brooklyn, NY foursome Family. Showcasing more than enough expansive heaviness to run with the Baroness and Mastodon crowd (“Exploding Baby”) while culling memorable melodies from a slew of styles ranging from progressive rock to sludgy blues (“Bridge and Tunnel”) to prairie metal (“Illegal Women”), this troupe’s superior songwriting pacing does an exemplary job of delivering inspiring instrumental interludes before unleashing furious vocal howls (“Othermother”), justly highlighting tumultuous musical crests and waves. If someone told you about a band that mixed Tool, Unsane, Mars Volta, Cave In, Thin Lizzy, and the acts aforementioned, you’d think they were joking; Family is no joke. www.familyslays.com

Foster Care - Bad City Vibe (Jackshack)

FOSTER CARE

Eschewing the stigma attached to the types of music normally associated with emanating from their stomping grounds, Brooklyn, NY punk rock squad Foster Care righteously recreate the disenchanted and displaced attitude of punk rock from its gestation period on the quartet’s 12-track excursion vibe BAD CITY VIBE (“Psychedelic Scumbag”). Laden with a bevy of catchy songs performed unhinged and intentionally recorded as dirty as on those dusty vinyls and broken cassettes hidden back in the closet (“Don’t Make Me”), this crew gets high marks for paying homage to the punk rock four-count while vividly capturing the confrontational and out of control nature and pure adrenaline rush that punk rock is supposed to deliver. If you lost faith in what modern society considers punk, allow Foster Care to reaffirm your faith and instill hope for more bands like them to appear (“I Never Meant To”). www.jkshk.blogspot.com

Bone Dance - Bone Dance (Throatruiner)

BONE DANCE

Boise, ID quintet Bone Dance summons up a maelstrom of hardcore malevolence on their self-titled 10-track endeavor. Aggressive and abrasive from start to finish, this hard-hitting release renders a ruthless and relentless rollercoaster ride fueled by seething anger and unabashed fury (“Children Having Children”). Creatively chaotic and unpredictable, this unit melds misanthropic mayhem from metalcore pioneers of the 90’s such as Botch and Converge (“White Guilt”) with an extra coating of filth a la contemporaries such as Gaza (“Conniver”) to leave scars on the brain and the ears of listeners bold enough to partake in their brand of brutality (“Barren”). www.bonedance.bandcamp.com
